BackHab I

The Water Way to Mobility and Pain Free Living

I have implemented Ruth Sova's BackHab II water walking progressions at our YMCA.  Several of the participants utilize walkers, wheel chairs and canes.  Many of them are reporting improvements that not only themselves, but their doctors are noticing significant improvements in their balance. Ruth has a wonderful tape 'BackHab II' explaining the progressions and modifications.  I started the program as a workshop (only intending to teach it a couple of times, teaching them the strides) and it is so popular it is now a regular class.  This program is wonderful for improving balance, muscular endurance, and stride length.

DESCRIPTION
Back pain and back problems are our number one non-terminal health problem and affect 4 out of 5 adults in this country. While back problems account for 18 million doctors visits a year approximately 90% of them can be treated at home. After determining which ones can be treated by a lay instructor, this correspondence course will cover factors that contribute to back pain; the anatomical function, terms and muscles of the low back and a discussion of treatment through aquatic exercise.

NEEDS IDENTIFICATION
With 80% of the population experiencing back pain at some time, offering back classes must have potential. The problem is finding the right instructor who can produce a good program. Your worries are over. BackHab can be used safely by any instructor. The client can even use it alone.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• Participants will define the cause of most back pain.
• Participants will select which clients they can safely treat.
• Participants will have materials that will allow them to create their own BackHab program by selecting moves from a "menu".
• Participants will analyze how daily life affects back problems and how to modify work habits without decreasing productivity.
